All crimes have a starting point, and this one is associated with a name, decade, and think tank that had a library card. It might be referred to as Project 1981, the year when Ronald Reagan, with the help of the most persuasive pamphleteers from the Heritage Foundation, dealt a blow to the American middle class and distributed a flag in order to prevent the country from hearing about the collapse. The calculations leading up to that point were almost comically obvious: a man who had only a high school diploma and a union card could still support a family of five, park two cars in the driveway, and retire with some money left over. Reagan’s real trick, though you might call it arson, was getting people to vote against their own paychecks by directing their fears towards communist organisations and abortion clinics, rather than at the boardrooms that were quietly reducing pensions.

For much of the twentieth century, the postwar situation tamed capitalism, a genuine truce being achieved between labour and capital which made the middle class the only group that really counted, with wages going up and there being a quiet hope that our children would do better than we did. Reagan didn’t merely reduce taxes; he cancelled that promise.

We say this since “tax the rich” is easy to say (tax the shorties better) but much harder to put into practice, and it happens that journalism which openly says so tends to disappear just as it begins to mention specific names. The idea of a free press was never that it should be free of charge; it was that it should be free from ownership, and those are not the same things, no matter how many publishers buy up mastheads and then quietly instruct them to stop asking where their money has gone. No satire in this one. The subject matter doesn’t get a comedic framing, and the child-safety line isn’t about squeamishness; it’s that humor is exactly the laundering mechanism these networks are using to recruit and create deniability, so a comedic treatment risks replicating what we’re warning about. We also do not name any specific executive or company (even if it should), as having concealed, ignored, or failed to disclose particular grooming patterns or predator networks. The argument is about industry-wide incentive structures and publicly reported findings, not an allegation of undisclosed knowledge by any named party.

That’s a hell of a trick. David Copperfield made the Statue of Liberty disappear once and got a Vegas residency out of it. This group made the American middle class disappear and got a tax cut.

Meanwhile, the actual demographic panics that dominate cable news immigrants, "urban" this, "coastal elite" that involve tens of millions of people, the overwhelming majority of whom are, last we checked, not personally responsible for the fact that a one-bedroom apartment in a mid-size American city now costs more per month than a Buick.

This is not an argument against artificial intelligence. It is not a brief for technological stagnation, a demand that everyone go back to asking librarians things, or a position paper from people who think the internet was a mistake. We are not Luddites. The Luddites, for the record, were also not what most people think they were (they were skilled workers protesting the destruction of their livelihoods without consultation or compensation), but that is a different story. Billionaires are building infrastructure the size of small cities in communities that did not agree to host it, did not know it was coming, and, in several documented cases, found out about it when the construction equipment arrived. We are not making a blanket argument against the technology. We are making a blanket argument against announcing it after the permits are already signed. These are different arguments. The first one is complicated. The second one shouldn’t be.

In northeast Louisiana, across the soybean fields and the rivercane, Meta is building a 4-million-square-foot AI campus called Hyperion, a 5-gigawatt mega-campus designed to support Meta’s custom Matia silicon and Blackwell chips. When finished, it will consume more electricity than the entire city of New Orleans and cover a footprint the size of lower Manhattan. Residents in the surrounding area have reportedly noticed their water turning brown and their lights going out for days at a time. They’ve also gotten sicker. It can require up to 5 million gallons of water per day, equivalent to the water use of up to 50,000 people, to provide cooling to arrays of humming networked computers. Meta, meanwhile, has been running YouTube ads about how much data centers help local communities. So, you know. For them, It’s going super great. But polling shows 70% of Americans don’t want to live next to an AI data center.

Would the country end up being the one that ran on Jim Crow, or the one that marched to end it? The one that dropped ordnance on strangers a hemisphere away, or the one that eventually said “yeah, that was bad” and tried a group hug? The one that mailed women to jail for discussing contraception, or the one that let them make their own medical decisions like adults?

Historically, the smart money was against. The republic shipped with two original sins baked directly into the founding paperwork (settler colonialism and chattel slavery) and from that opening balance, a genuinely heroic amount of interest has accrued ever since. By any reasonable actuarial standard, no country should be expected to climb out of a hole that deep.

The idea that America was structurally going to keep winning, that history had a direction, and the direction was his people. For a long stretch, this looked less like a belief and more like a natural law, the sort of thing you didn’t argue with any more than gravity. American dominance wasn’t a claim anyone had to defend. It was the water everyone swam in. That assumption doesn’t hold anymore. Not because some rival empire out-innovated anybody or out-hustled. It’s simpler and more embarrassing than that: the country stopped doing the things that made the assumption true in the first place. It kept expecting the reputation to renew automatically, like a payservice nobody remembered to cancel. Dominance, it turns out, was never a birthright. It was a bill that came due every generation, and this generation let it lapse.

Somewhere in America right now, a man with a podcast is explaining that democracy is actually a psyop. He is wearing a nice Uncle Sam shirt. His microphone costs $400 and has a Substack with 14,000 subscribers. He was recently photographed at a rooftop party in Miami standing next to someone who works in private equity, and he is, in every technical sense, vibing. This is not a fringe figure.

Not your father's conservatives. These folks are too cool, detached, and, honestly, too online for that. Instead, they’re crafting a new aesthetic of rebellion. They are younger, more insufferable, and crucially, they have figured out that being anti-woke is not just a mood. This is the new center of American intellectual life if we define "intellectual life" generously. A movement so aesthetically curated, financially motivated, and philosophically incoherent that it has somehow become the most culturally potent force in the country. Congratulations to libertarians involved.

To understand what is happening, one must first understand who is doing it. They are not a party, even if they are close to MAGA, and not a think tank. A loose, mutually reinforcing ecosystem of podcasters, anonymous X philosophers, artfully disheveled scenesters, some right-wing militias, and some billionaires who provide what a startup would call "series A funding for the culture."

There is a man somewhere in Ohio (sorry, Ohio) who has not trusted the mainstream media since 2016, when he discovered, via a Facebook post shared by his cousin's ex-wife, that the moon is actually a holographic projection installed by the Rothschilds to distract us from the fact that all birds are government drones. The guy is now an "independent researcher." He has 847 followers on a platform that used to be called Twitter and is now called something that sounds like a sound effect in a children's cartoon, in a very real sense, the logical endpoint of everything we are about to discuss.

Disinformation is not new. Humans have been lying to each other with great enthusiasm since roughly the invention of language. Julius Caesar’s enemies spread rumors about him. Medieval peasants believed Jews were poisoning the wells. British tabloids once reported that a mermaid had been discovered in Brighton. The difference is that back then, disinformation spread at the speed of a horse, and our average peasant could only be reached by someone willing to shout very loudly in a market square. Today, disinformation travels at the speed of light, requires no horse, and is turbocharged by an algorithm that has determined that nothing drives engagement quite like watching a man absolutely lose his mind about anything.

To put that in perspective, the entire annual revenue of the American newspaper industry is roughly $9 billion. Total media investment by a small group of billionaires: north of $70 billion, and climbing. These men have spent nearly eight times that amount acquiring influence over the information environment. And they did it while also being the primary subjects that a healthy information environment would need to scrutinize.

Now consider what we currently have:

The information is generated at an industrial scale by LLMs large language models trained on the internet, which contain a significant proportion of false information. The sources are Facebook pages with patriotic cover photos, LinkedIn verified checkmarks, and YouTube channels hosted by men whose main qualification is a ring light and strong opinions. These channels are algorithmically optimized to show more of whatever made anyone angry yesterday. And the audience is the same guy, who is now 47 minutes deep into a video explaining why the collapse of the AI bubble is itself an AI-generated psyop. The bubble cannot burst because the bubble is also the instrument by which we would learn that the bubble has burst.

Stop it. It’s not funny. A Bermuda-style tax haven, right here in the U.S., no boat required or beach access included. Some particular financial maneuver that is so brazen, perfectly constructed, impeccably laundered in the language of rules-following, that it crosses into a kind of performance art. The exploit involves no illegal act. It requires no offshore account, no dummy corporation with a whimsical name registered in any Islands. It uses a vehicle built specifically for the benefit of the middle class, deployed to produce outcomes the middle class will ultimately help subsidize through their own continued, diligent, rule-abiding tax payments.

The ultra-wealthy have found it extraordinarily effective for stepping elegantly and use this exploit in the same way a man in very good shoes navigates a puddle. The shoes remain spotless. But you are already wet.

Optimism used to be one of the strongest parts of American identity. The American Dream used to cost one salary and mild alcoholism. People today who claim “America used to be great” usually talk about a very specific image of the United States. There is a rhetorical trick so old and so well-worn that it has developed its own grooves, like a record that has been played in the same spot so many times the needle falls there automatically. The trick is nostalgia. Specifically, is selective nostalgia the political art of pointing to a golden past and saying we want that back, while carefully avoiding any discussion of the specific policy conditions that produced that greatness? “Make America Great Again” is the most interesting deployment of this trick in modern political history. It is good as slogans go, because it contains a premise (America was great), an implication (America is no longer great), and a promise (we can return), while conspicuously omitting any answer to the only question that actually matters:

What makes a life?

Great question. According to our records: 847 data points across 14 federal databases, a confidence score of 94.7, a Facebook account opened in 2019, two Medicaid claims filed in the same calendar year as an address change, and a credit inquiry from a landlord in November. That’s what makes a life, at least the kind of life that gets a shape drawn around an American neighborhood.

Let’s hear the philosophical version. Sure, more than what we say; more, even, than what we do. A life is also what we love and what we believe in. Correct. This is why some also collect what you search for at 2 am, which news articles you read past the headline, how long you paused on which paragraph, and whether the pause pattern is consistent with radicalization or just insomnia. They don't judge, they keep the score. Cross-referenced. They have all the connections in a graph. It's really quite beautiful from that end, little nodes and lines, radiating outward like a flower, except each petal is a person who can be pulled in for questioning if they become sufficiently interesting. What…

For some generations, connection has largely meant the Internet. Before we recoil, knowing well the toxic madness that infests that hive at that time, understand that the Internet was a very different thing. It was a friend. They understand, and they have your browsing history from that period archived in three jurisdictions. It's actually touching, in retrospect, how much you trusted the process. They were moved and monetized the feeling. It was a community without borders or limits, one voice and millions, a common frontier that had been settled but not exploited by diverse tribes living amicably enough side by side. Honestly, a nightmare from an intelligence standpoint, all that anonymity, that plurality. We were born into a story that was already in progress. The characters had been cast before our arrival, and the conflict had been carefully designed to feel urgent without ever being resolved. One villain changes every few years, a necessary refresh, like a streaming service rotating its content, but the plot remains structurally identical, because the plot was never the point. What…? The point was that you would keep watching, reading…whatever. Don't feel bad. Everyone is watching. The people who believe they have stopped watching are simply watching on a different channel. In terms of production value, it is indistinguishable from the original. The set dressing is slightly different, and the host is angrier. But the conclusion is always the same.

Here is what they figured out, and by "they," we are doing a lot of work in that sentence, which is intentional; they do not need to destroy freedom to end it. Destroying things is conspicuous. It generates paperwork, witnesses, and the sort of grainy footage that turns up in documentaries. Instead, they redefine freedom as the act of choosing (between options that have been pre-selected) as something extremely meaningful. Give people a button to press. Make the button slightly different colors each cycle. Stand back. Watch them defend the button with their lives. The genius of the cage is that it looks exactly like the outside of the same cage.

We can still have elections, we can still have a burger. The counting is real. What was decided before the counting is also real, and these two facts live in the national consciousness without ever being formally introduced. Journalism still exists, of course. Thousands of journalists file stories every day. Some of them are even dying about things that are happening. The trick is not to stop the stories. It's to ensure there are so many stories, arriving so quickly, at such volume, that the audience develops a condition best described as informed helplessness: the feeling of knowing everything and being able to do nothing, which is functionally identical to knowing nothing, but comes with the satisfying sensation of being well-read. The people who needed to read it did not read it because the algorithm, which is not a person and therefore bears no responsibility for anything, had already decided they would prefer content about something else. The algorithm did not choose this maliciously. It simply optimized for engagement. The fact that engagement and despair share a nearly identical neurochemical signature is, at this stage, probably their dissertation. Reality is whatever you can convince enough people it is, for long enough, before they die. The beautiful, horrible part is that the truth was always available. It was shelved in a section nobody visits, between two books with very unappealing covers.

You are reading this, which is either a warning, a conspiracy, a joke, or a demonstration. Possibly all. Possibly this is also a frame, carefully constructed to make you feel perceptive for having noticed it, thereby replacing your skepticism with a more comfortable, pre-approved version that goes nowhere, asks for nothing, and certainly does not suggest any particular next step. Or possibly we just thought it would be funny. The terrifying thing is that you cannot tell the difference. None of us can, anymore. And the people who designed the outcome are right now in a room or island somewhere, or possibly nowhere, having what can only be described as a great time.

If we are to send a message, it will certainly be to keep the public on the right side throughout a hard task, with all the disinformation forces trying to impose a narrative. We will try to make amends, but our voice cannot beat algorithmic fascism disguised as the new world order. Antisemitism, that oldest and most durable of hatreds, bloomed magnificently from both ends of the political horseshoe, nurtured by propaganda, outrage, and decades of a catastrophic strategic blunder that taught an entire generation to conflate a government with its people, a nation with its policies, and criticism with hatred until nobody could tell the difference anymore. However, there are ignorant people out there who are not that nuanced and don’t make that distinction. They read the conspiracy theories, get in their social media echo chambers, and conflate all the negativity around Jews, Israel, AIPAC, etc. We are reflective enough to understand that Jewish people are not to blame entirely for this problem.

From across the Atlantic, the view was unambiguous: a debacle. Start to finish. A masterclass in how to take a justified cause, a genuine threat, a real moral argument, and run it through the meat grinder of incompetence, illiberalism, and chronic short-termism until what came out the other side was unrecognizable as strategy, leadership, or anything resembling an intelligent plan.

The war against Iran was absolutely, unequivocally, one hundred percent justified. But at the same time, not necessarily “justified”; winning the war was. If it can’t, or if it gets worse, what was the point? A Regime change from the plans exposed was largely a military fantasy. It’s quite pointless now to argue with people for or against this war. Like it or not, it’s here. Is American involvement justified? We say totally Yes. Ask anyone, the podcast bros, Twitch streamers, even the guy who got all his geopolitical expertise from a three-minute TikTok and Tucker Carlson-Candace Owens highlight reel. They'll all tell the same thing: justified. Until it’s not. Stop blaming others.
